New Hardware Device Has Been Installed
•
If a new hardware device (an optical disk drive for example) has been installed in your computer, check
that the device and its driver have been correctly configured and installed: refer to the instructions in
the On-line Documentation or in the device’s installation guide.
•
If a new device (a printer for example) has been connected to your computer, check that the cable is
properly connected and the driver is correctly installed. Refer to the On-line Documentation or to the
device’s installation guide.
Note:
even if the problem seems to have nothing to do with the modification you made,
review the process you have just performed. For example, if you have just installed memory
modules and your optical disk drive is not working any more, check that the drive cables
have not been disconnected during memory installation.
Note:
read files or documents shipped with the product, that are named «Readme» or «Readme
first»: they may contain the solution to your problem.

Last known good configuration
: allows you to restore the most recent settings that worked.
•
Safe mode
: if a newly added device or a changed driver is still causing problems you can use
safe mode to remove the device or reverse the change. In safe mode, Windows
®
uses default
settings (VGA monitor, no network, Microsoft mouse driver, and the minimum device drivers
required to start Windows
®
). You will not have access to optical disk drives, printers or other
devices. Select this option to enter the operating system and use the System Restore feature.
System Restore returns your computer to an earlier time without causing you to lose recent work.
For more information about this feature, refer to the Windows
®
Help and Support Centre.
•
Repair your computer
(Windows Vista
®
only): can be used to automatically diagnose and fix
problems that are preventing Windows Vista
®
from starting. These problems could be registry
corruption, missing/corrupted/damaged system or driver files, and hardware failures.
