SECTION 1.2: PRE-INSTALLATION TASKS

This section provides a list of tasks that you must perform prior to delivery and installation of the NX5 
transmitter. 

To prepare for installation of an NX5 transmitter, perform the following tasks: 

1.

Ensure that the correct transmitter configuration is ordered. Check the ac power requirements, 
preset frequency and other options. Complete and return the technical questionnaire provided by 
your Nautel Sales Agent.

2.

Consider the method of shipping when placing an order. The standard “upright” configuration 
allows the power transformer to remain in the transmitter cabinet for shipping. If space constraints 
require another method of shipping, inform your Nautel Sales representative.

3.

Select a location for the transmitter in the transmitter room. Determine whether additional 
heating, ventilating or cooling capacity is needed at the site. Identify any special requirements 
regarding air flow around the cabinet (for example, ducting hot air away from the cabinet, or 
bringing in external cooling air). See 

“Selecting a Location for the Transmitter” on page 1.3.1

.

4.

If you are planning to anchor your transmitter against seismic activity, prepare the transmitter 
room floor to accept four anchoring bolts. Four 5/8-inch (16 mm) holes are provided in the 
transmitter floor to allow this (see 

Figure 1.3.5 on page 1.3.8

 for hole location). Square washers are 

provided in the ancillary kit to aid in anchoring the transmitter (see NX5 Installation Manual).

If this is an upgrade or replacement transmitter (that is, if the site is already set up for a 
transmitter), go to 

Step 10

. (If you are upgrading a site, verify the feedline, the lightning protection 

systems, and the ac power service. Refer to Nautel’s 

Recommendations for Transmitter Site 

Preparation Manual.

Install ac power service into the planned location of the transmitter, and select a location for an ac 
power switch near the transmitter location. For detailed information, see 

“Electrical Power” on 

page 1.5.2

Be aware of lightning protection issues when installing ac power. Lightning protection is essential 
to protect both personnel and equipment at your site. Refer to Nautel’s 

Recommendations for 

Transmitter Site Preparation Manual.

Install a safety power interlock switch in series with the ac power service installed in 

Step 6

. Nautel 

may provide an optional keyed interlock system that will meet this requirement.
