Configuring Serial Communications
6.1 About Serial Communications
The Trillium Compact has an integrated Web server that is accessible using a standard Web
browser and the RS-232 serial interface. You can create a direct serial connection to a
computer using a serial communications cable (see
Section 6.2 “Establishing a Direct Serial
34) or connect using a Nanometrics digitizer such as a Taurus or
Trident (release 3.4 or greater, see

If you are using a direct serial connection to a computer, you will need to configure a Serial
Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) connection (see
Section 6.2.1 “Creating a SLIP Connection on

If you are using a connection to a Nanometrics digitizer, a SLIP connection is not required
because the Web interface of the Trillium Compact is accessed through the Web interface
of the digitizer.

If the computer is not equipped with a serial port, a commercially available USB-to-serial
adapter can be used.
You only need to create one SLIP connection per computer for multiple Trillium Compact
units, assuming the computer’s serial port has not been used for another purpose in the
interim. To use the SLIP connection with multiple units, simply disconnect the serial connector
from one unit, move it to the next unit, and go to the IP address of the new unit in your Web

Serial communications should not be active when the highest quality seismic signal is desired
because it may cause low levels of noise on the analog output signals.
