Steering Cable Adjustment
Inspection Steps
There are a couple ways to notice if the Fort Mac steering cables are out of adjustment:
A. The control lever(s) have excessive slack in neutral position, and do not have linear engagement throughout the entire stroke.
B. Ensure the Mudd-Ox is shut off. Remove the lower operator seat and locate the z-bars (Figure-1). Move the right side control lever while looking
at the frontmost z-bar. If the cable has a small amount of slack, it is fine. If there is significant slack and the cable is attempting to bind up, it
needs adjusted. Complete this test for the left side control lever as well, while looking at the rearmost z-bar.
Adjustment Steps
1. You have determined at least 1 of the steering cables needs adjusted. Complete the steps below for 1 cable at a time.
2. There are (2) adjustment locations for the steering cables. You may use either location, however, if there is no more adjustment at one location,
it musted be adjusted at the other. If both locations are out of adjustment, new steering cables are required.
a. Remove the lower operator seat, seat back, and L-seat bracket. This will gain access to the z-bars mounted on top of the hydraulic pumps.
b. Place padding on the driver floorboard. Wear safety glasses and lay inside the Mudd-Ox in a position to see underneath the upper body.
The steering cables are mounted directly behind the control levers.
3. Use a 15/16” wrench to loosen the (2) steering cable jam nuts (A in Figure-1, 2).
4. Once the jam nut is loose, use the same 15/16” wrench to tighten the (2) adjustment nuts 1/4 of a turn (B in Figure 1, 2).
Note:
Do not tighten
more than 1/4, as overtightening the cable will bend the mounting brackets.
5. Retighten the (2) jams nut (A in Figure 1, 2). Now the cable has been tightened. Repeat the Inspection Steps above to verify if further adjustment
is needed. If Inspection Steps pass, you are finished.
6. Repeat steps #1-5 for the other control lever if adjustment is needed.
