The exhaust system is a frequently overlooked component of an engine. It is important to make sure the muffler
is in good condition and free of debris and/or insects.
NOTE:
A blocked muffler will result in poor performance. If a muffler is completely blocked the engine may not
start.
The MTD engine uses one of two different mufflers; a standard muffler covered here or a catalytic converter muf-
fler that will be covered later in this chapter.
To remove/replace the conventional muffler
1. Remove the muffler cover that is secured to the cylin-
der head by removing the two nuts using a 10mm
wrench. See Figure 8.1.
NOTE:
If the muffler has an autochoke temperature com-
pensator on it, unhook the choke rod. See Figure
8.2.
• Remove the engine shroud
• Remove the compensator using a 10 mm wrench.
