4WD operation <FG models>
Select the 2WD (rear-wheel-drive) mode or 4WD
(all-wheel-drive) mode as necessary for the condi-
tion of the road surface. The 4WD mode can be
used for extra traction on rough road surfaces and
on snow-covered road surfaces (in mountainous
regions, for example).
CAUTION
With a 4WD vehicle, power is applied to both the
front wheels and rear wheels; if incorrect tires
are fitted, they can prevent the vehicle from per-
forming to its full potential and can even cause
an accident. Incorrect tires can also adversely
affect powertrain components. Please observe
the following tire-related cautions:
•
Make sure all of the tires are the specified
size and are identical in terms of manufac-
turer, brand, and tread pattern. Be particu-
larly careful when fitting snow tires or other
winter-use tires.
•
Use tires that do not differ from each other in
terms of the extent of wear.
•
Regularly check the tire inflation pressures
and keep them adjusted to the specified val-
ues.
•
When tire replacement is necessary, replace
all of the tires at the same time.
•
Use genuine wheels. Do not change the
wheel size.
•
To ensure that the tires wear evenly, rotate
the tires every 10,000 km (6,000 miles).
For towing of the vehicle, raise the front wheels
off the ground and disconnect the propeller
shaft at the end closer to the rear wheels.
The 4WD mode is not recommended for driving
on dry paved roads as the tires may wear down
prematurely, the running noise may increase,
and more fuel may be consumed. Malfunction of
the drive train components may also result. Be
sure to drive in the 2WD mode on dry paved
roads.
