5-10. Engine Prestart Checks
Check all engine fluids daily.
Engine must be cold and on a level surface.
The automatic shutdown system stops en-
gine if oil pressure is too low or coolant tem-
perature is too high.
This unit has a low oil pressure shut-
down switch. However, some condi-
tions may cause engine damage before
the engine shuts down. Check oil level
often and do not use the oil pressure
shutdown system to monitor oil level.
Follow run-in procedure in engine manual.
If unburned fuel and oil collect in exhaust
pipe during run-in, see Section 11.
Fuel
NOTICE
−
Do not use gasoline. Gasoline
will damage engine.
Add fresh diesel fuel before starting to pre-
vent air from entering the fuel system (see
engine maintenance label for fuel specifica-
tions). Leave filler neck empty to allow room
for expansion.
Engine stops if fuel level is low.
Engine Oil
After fueling, check oil with unit on level sur-
face. Oil level on a cold engine should be
between cold low and cold high indicators
on dipstick. Oil level on a warm engine
should be between warm high and warm
low indicators on dipstick. Add oil if neces-
sary (see maintenance label for engine oil
specifications).
Cold Weather Starting
To improve cold weather starting:
Use Starting Aid switch (see Section
6-1).
Keep battery in good condition. Store
battery in warm area.
Use fuel formulated for cold weather
(diesel fuel can gel in cold weather).
Contact local fuel supplier for fuel in-
formation.
Use correct grade oil for cold weather
(see Section 8-2).
