PLANING WARPED PIECES
If the wood to be planed is dished or warped, take
light cuts until the surface is flat. Avoid forcing such
material down against the table; excessive pressure
will spring it while passing the cutterheads, and it will
spring back and remain curved after the cut is
completed.
PLANING SHORT OR THIN PIECES
(Fig. 34-35)
When planing thin pieces, always use hold-down/
push blocks to minimize all danger to hands. Fig. 34
illustrates proper use of push blocks.
WARNING:
Do not perform planing operations on
material shorter than 10" (25.4 cm), narrower than 3/4"
(19 mm) wider than 6" (15 cm), or less than 1/2" (125
mm) thick (refer to Fig. 35).
NOTE:
Always use hold-down/push blocks for
planing material thinner than 3" (75 mm).
DIRECTION OF GRAIN (Fig. 36-37)
Avoid feeding workpieces into the jointer against the
grain as shown in Fig. 36. This will result in chipped
and splintered edges. Feed with the grain as shown
in Fig. 37 to obtain a smooth surface.
