• Ensure that you have prepared all the required items before installing an operating system. See “Before

installing an operating system” on page 1.

• Follow the instructions on the screen in addition to the instructions in this topic.

To install an operating system, do the following:

1. Connect the prepared USB storage device to the server. The USB storage device should contain

required device drivers for your server model and operating system.

2. Insert the operating system installation disc into the optical drive that you have set as the first startup

device. Then, start the server from the optical drive.

3. Press any key on the keyboard as soon as the message

Press any key to boot from CD

is displayed. The

Windows setup initialization begins.

Note:

If your server configuration is onboard SATA without RAID, go to step 8.

4. Press F6 as soon as the message

Press F6 if you need ... driver

is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

5. When the message

Setup could not determine the ... devices

is displayed, press S and follow the

instructions on the screen to install device drivers.

6. When the message

You have chosen...

is displayed, select

LSI Embedded MegaRAID (Windows

2003...)

and press Enter.

7. When the message

Setup will load support for the following mass storage devices

is displayed, press

Enter.

8. When the welcome window is displayed, press Enter. Then, the Windows License Agreement is

displayed.

9. Press F8 to accept the Windows License Agreement and continue with the installation.

10. When all hard disk drives available on the server are displayed, select a drive partition on which you

want to install the operating system and then press Enter.

11. Follow the instructions on the screen to make selections until the installation process begins. Then, the

drive partition, which you have selected, will be formatted and the applicable files will be copied from
the operating system installation disc to the drive partition. When the process finishes, the server will
restart automatically.

12. After the server restarts, follow the instructions on the screen to set the regional and language options,

enter your name and license key, and do other configurations to complete the installation.

13. Install other required device drivers. To download device drivers, go to http://www.lenovo.com/drivers

and follow the instructions on the Web page.

Installing a Microsoft Windows Server 2008 operating system

This topic provides instructions on installing the following operating systems:

• Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Foundations Edition (x64)

• Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition (x86 and x64)
