5. Squeeze the control bar against the handle.

6. Pull the recoil starter out until you feel resistance; then

pull vigorously to start the engine.

7. When the engine starts, regulate the engine speed as

desired.

Stopping the Engine

1. Move the throttle control to the

 (Slow) position.

2. Release the self-propel drive control bail (Fig. 11).

Both the engine and the blade will stop. Contact your
Authorized Service Dealer if they do not.

3. Wait for all moving parts to stop.

Note:

Disconnect the wire from the spark plug if you

leave the lawn mower unattended.

Using the Self-propel Drive

Move the ground speed control to the desired setting and
squeeze the control bar against the handle to drive the
lawn mower.

Note:

You can vary the ground speed by increasing or

decreasing the distance between the control bar and the
handle (Fig. 14).

SPEED

VARIES

Figure 14

Lower the control bar to slow the lawn mower when
making a turn, maneuvering, or if the lawn mower moves
too fast for you. If you lower the control bar too far, the
lawn mower stops self-propelling. Squeeze the control bar
closer to the handle to increase the ground speed. When
the control bar is tight against the handle, the lawn mower
will self-propel at the maximum ground speed. You do not
need to squeeze the control bar against the handle to
self-propel. Move the ground speed control to

 (Neutral)

when you use the lawn mower for trimming and whenever
you leave the lawn mower unattended.

Note: Your lawn mower comes with free-wheeling
clutches which make it easier to pull the lawn mower
rearward. You must lower the control bar enough to
disengage the self-propel drive and disengage the clutches
before pulling the lawn mower rearward. You may need to
push the lawn mower forward one inch (25 mm) or more
after you release the control bar to disengage both the
self-propel drive the clutches.

Adjusting the Cutting Height

Three numbers cast into the housing represent the cutting
height settings. The diamond between each number
represents a 1/2-inch (13 cm) increment.

1. Stop the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.

2. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug (Fig. 12).
