Orienting the Sample
When mounting test samples, orientation can be important. Edge leakage or oxidation on some materials
can affect the test result. It is important to place the “barrier side towards the carrier”. Follow the guidelines
below to minimize edge leakage and oxidation effects.
Homogeneous Materials
If you are testing a homogeneous, one-layer sample, the orientation of the sample in the cell
is not critical.
Multi-Layered and Laminated Materials
Install a multilayered film or laminate with the barrier coating or laminate up, toward the top of
the cell. For example, a one-sided, PVDC-coated paper should be mounted with the PVDC
side up, placing the PVDC towards the carrier gas.
Metalized Materials
Insert the film into the test cell with the metalized side towards the carrier gas to prevent
oxidation.
