TESTING AND TROUBLESHOOTING
1. GENERAL
This section provides operational level testing procedures for the Model FA5000 CVR
Cockpit Voice Recorder when using the CVR Automated Test Station (CATS) software,
P/N: 17TES0420. The CATS software is contained on the L3AP Read-Out Center/7
(ROC/7), P/N: 17TES0700 and is used in conjunction with the L3AP Recorder Interface
Unit (RIU), P/N: 17TES0710. Testing for the Model FA5000 CVR is based upon an auto-
mated operational test procedure. The automated test procedure may serve as an ac-
ceptance criteria for the unit, as well as provide pointers to probable malfunctioning as-
semblies in the event that the unit is not functioning properly.
CAUTION: THE MODEL FA5000 CVR’s PRINTED CIRCUIT ASSEMBLIES CONTAIN DE-
VICES SENSITIVE TO ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE (ESD). PERSONNEL
HANDLING A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD SHOULD COMPLY WITH PROPER
ESD HANDLING PROCEDURES; FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN DAM-
AGE TO THE ESD SENSITIVE DEVICES RENDERING THE PRINTED CIRCUIT
BOARD USELESS. PRIOR TO HANDLING A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD, EN-
SURE PROPER PERSONNEL GROUNDING TECHNIQUES ARE USED. ALSO,
ENSURE THAT ALL CIRCUIT BOARDS ARE PLACED INTO STATIC SHIELD-
ING CONDUCTIVE BAGS WHEN HANDLING OR STORING.
2. MAINTENANCE PHILOSOPHY

The EUROCAE ED

112 compliant Model FA5000 CVR is considered an ON CONDITION
LRU, meaning that the unit does not require any special periodic maintenance except for
the ULB test procedure.
Each of its printed wiring assemblies (PWAs) makes extensive
use of surface mount technology (SMT). The repair of a PWA containing SMT devices
requires specialized training and factory equipment, along with special troubleshooting
and soldering techniques; therefore, L3 Technologies, Aviation Products has deemed that
PWAs containing SMT devices are not to be repaired in the field. As a result, the Model
FA5000 CVR’s maintenance philosophy is to level-2 board replacement.
The FA5000 CVR, has three field replaceable assemblies: (1) the Aircraft Interface PWA,
which contains the power and input circuits; (2) the Main Processor PWA, which condi-
tions the audio streams into digital formats for recording and contains the processing and
control circuits; and (3) the Crash
−
Survivable Memory Unit (CSMU), which is used to digi-
tally store and crash protect the cockpit voice communications. When it has been deter-
mined that an assembly is faulty, it should be removed from service, properly packaged,
and returned to L3Technologies, Aviation Products for repair or replacement. No trouble-
