8510 CAPABILITIES
9-1. INTRODUCTION
9-1.1
Introducing the New STE-8510 Capabilities
STE releases prior to Release 2.3 provided limited support of the 5ESS 8510 feature set. This chapter
provides a description of all of the STE-8510 features available beginning with the Release 2.3 STE
(HP0575/NP0565). These features can be summarized as follows:
•
A
ccess to many of the Electronic Key Telephone Services (EKTS) and call appearance/call
handling (CACH) features available on the Lucent® 5ESS and AVAYA® DEFINITY switches .
•
Non-secure 8510 operation
•
5ESS-8510 STE Secure Casual Conferencing
NOTE
You should only use STE-8510 switch type setting on desktop STEs. 8510
operation is not supported in other versions of STE products.
NOTE
Experienced 8510 terminal users should be aware that they may need to adjust to
using the STE as an EKTS telephone.

Section 9.3 provides details of non-secure calling with the STE-8510 switch setting.
Section 9.4 provides details of the features supported with the STE-8510 switch setting on the 5ESS
and DEFINITY switches.
Section 9.5 and 9.6 discuss secure calls to or from a STE-8510 capable terminal when connected to the
5ESS or DEFINITY switch.
Section 9.7 provides details of setting up the STE-8510 when connected to the 5ESS or DEFINITY
switch. Switch configuration information is also provided in Section 9.7.

9-2.1 Description
of
New STE-8510 Features
9-2.1.1 Location of Call Appearance/Feature Buttons
The locations of all front panel indicators for operating with the STE-8510 switch type settings are shown
in
. The STE provides 10 call-appearance feature buttons. Up to six of these buttons can be
used for call appearances. Buttons not assigned to call appearances may be assigned to features. Only
eight of the call appearance/feature buttons have associated LEDs. Features requiring visual
annunciation [e.g., Call Forwarding] should be assigned to buttons with LEDs. [It is recommended that
8510 call appearances be assigned to feature buttons with LEDS.]
