General snorkeling advice
•
Do not go into the water if tired or unwell.
•
Do not take more than three big breaths before descending below the surface of the
water. Over breathing may cause a loss of consciousness underwater.
•
Be warned that one’s natural buoyancy decreases when going below the surface.
Snorkelers will have to swim upwards before they begin to float back to the surface.
•
Before snorkeling, check the sea currents on the day.
•
Take the time to learn about the snorkeling site that will be visited.
•
It is advisable to have exposure protection both in and out of the water.
•
Swim with another person in case of an emergency.
•
Never take or touch anything from the sea.
•
For beginners, it may be beneficial to practice breathing with the snorkel in a shallow
pool before entering deeper waters.
•
When snorkeling, the water pressure may compress the eardrums. Pressure may be
relieved by pinching the nose with two fingers then blowing through the nose.
•
Keep in mind the distance that has been swum out and ensure to reserve enough
energy to swim back.
•
To prevent the mask lens from fogging up, it is recommended to let a little water
through the mask and shake the head to clear.
