What
is
Hypertension?
Hypertension (or High Blood Pressure)
is
a
chronic
medical
condition
in
which
the
arterial
blood
pressure
is
elevated.
Persistent
hypertension
is
one
of
the
risk
factors
for
stroke,
heart
failure
and
is
a
leading
cause
of
chronic
kidney
failure.
Even
a
moderate
elevation
of
blood
pressure
can
lead
to
shortened
life
expectancy.
Since
hypertension
is
commonly
asymptomatic
or
clinically
silent
(i.e.
no
noticeable
symptoms),
is
often
referred
to
as
a
‘silent
killer’.
As
many
as
1
in
4
adults
have
hypertension
without
knowing
it.
As
such
it
is
important
that
blood
pressure
is
monitored
on
a
regular
basis.
