Yes, you can play back the disc because Dolby Digital EX
is compatible with Dolby Digital. However, to get the
maximum performance of Dolby Digital EX, we
recommend to connect the DIGITAL OUT jack to a
decoder or amplifier/receiver with built-in decoder that
supports Dolby Digital EX. In this case, set [DIGITAL

Some Dolby Digital discs contain 5.1-ch Surround or
Dolby Surround audio data. What is the difference
between these two types?
Both are surround sound standards developed by Dolby
Laboratories Inc. in the U.S.A.
In Dolby Surround, two-channel surround audio
information is recorded onto the analog stereo (left and
right) channels together with front stereo audio
information. When played back, the surround signals are
separated by a Dolby Surround or Dolby Pro Logic
decoder.
Dolby Digital digitally encodes and records up to six
channels of information for left, right, center, rear left, rear
right and LFE (Low-Frequency Effect, for use with a
subwoofer).
When played back, a Dolby Digital decoder decodes the
data and outputs signals separately.
Generally, Dolby Digital sounds better.
