InSight Radar 2 - Black Box (IR2-BB)™

Data Cable Non Slave Units
Installations that don’t have a slave port connector or adaptor cable must
splice the IR2-BB data cable directly into the radar feeder cable.
WARNING
:
Before attempting to splice cables, contact the Jeppesen
Marine
®
Technical Support Department for assistance. This series of
steps requires an individual with advanced electronic technical skills in
reading product schematics information and being able to identify specific
signal types for connection to the IR2-BB data cable. Do not attempt this
procedure if your skill set does not meet the requirement. Personal injury
and damage to equipment may accrue.
The procedure shall assume the operator has the technical skills to
perform wire splicing and can insulate connections to prevent shorting
different signals together.
To splice cables:
Disconnect all power to the radar, display plotter and IR2-BB. Verify
that no voltage is present with a Digital Multi Meter (DMM) or similar
equipment.
Remove the 8-pin connector and pins from the IR2-BB data cable.
Strip back the insulation to that of ¼ inch or to a customary length.
Remove the radar feed cable from the display; then select the splice
point ideal for the installation of the IR2-BB.
Using the specific radar manual as a reference, open the feeder cable
at the splice point being careful not to damage the bundle of wires.
In most cases the coax shield will need to be unwoven to expose
the inter wires. Again, be careful not to damage the coax and use
electrical / electronic standards applicable to the area.
The following figure has the schematic identifying the IR2-BB data
cable signals that must be connected to the radar feeder cable in
“T” mode configuration. This type of connection does not break the
original path from the radar to the display.
NOTE
:
The color of wires within the radar feeder cable may vary
between cable suppliers and will not be called out. Use the signal names
(which are common) and the radar manual as the means to mate signals
together. For example, Trigger from the IR2-BB must connect to the
trigger signal at the splice point coming from the display and radar.
Secure each wire to its counterpart with solder and insulate. Provide a
water tight seal and insulate the complete bundle.
Verify signal connections between the display and IR2-BB. If possible
perform the same verification between the IR2-BB and the radar.
