The
antenna
has
a
detection
pattern
which
is
not
symmetrical,
and
experimentation
with
the
test
target
and
other
devices
will
show
you
what
the
pattern
is.
If
the
antenna
is
within
2
feet
of
a
target,
the
pattern
is
not
as
important.
This
is
the
reason
the
antenna
is
held
close
to
the
surface
being
searched.
16.
The
NJD
‐
5's
antenna
radiates
a
polarized
signal,
meaning
that
the
signal
from
the
target
will
give
different
results
when
the
antenna
is
rotated
90
degrees.
The
signal
is
oriented
vertically,
parallel
to
the
short
side
of
the
antenna.
Try
different
orientations
of
the
antenna
and
the
target
to
get
the
strongest
return
signal.
17.
Attach
the
backpack
style
carrying
strap.
Clip
the
short
ends
of
the
strap
to
the
ring
‐
like
handles
on
the
electronics
package.
Clip
the
long
ends
to
the
side
opposite
the
short
ends
so
the
strap
forms
an
"x".
Connect
the
straps
so
the
cables
come
off
the
rear
of
the
NJD
‐
5
and
will
not
interfere
with
the
straps
when
the
NJD
‐
5
is
carried.
Keep
the
strap
fairly
long
so
the
NJD
‐
5
electronics
package
rides
low
on
the
back.
This
way
the
controls
can
be
reached
without
having
to
take
off
the
back
pack.
Use
the
loop
‐
like
chest
strap
to
adjust
the
shoulder
strap
location
on
the
shoulders
for
more
comfort.
