Functional description of the UPS
Functional description of the UPS
The UPS powers the PayCon when the net adaptor does not do this any longer.
The UPS consists of:
§
2 batteries;
§
a switching transistor to connect the power line from the battery to the PayCon;
§
a microcontroller controlling the unit
The microcontroller compares the net adaptor’s voltage with a reference voltage. When during a transaction the net
adaptor’s voltage is lower than the reference voltage, than the transistor is being switched on. After finalizing the
transaction, the transistor is switched off.
The connection with the PayCon consists of 3 signals. Two towards and one coming from the PayCon.
Signal
Direction
Indicating
Function
1
Towards the PayCon
Voltage of battery
High signal;
Battery capacity sufficient.
Switching signal (1 Hz);
Battery almost empty, replacement necessary.
No signal;
Battery empty. The PayCon does not start up a
transaction.
2
Towards the PayCon
UPS battery power active
The PayCon finalizes the current transaction. After
that the UPS will be switched off.
3
From the PayCon
Battery power necessary if net adaptor fails
This active signal switches the UPS.
After finalizing the transaction, the PayCon switches
the signal off. The UPS switches the battery off
through the transistor. After that the PayCon is
switched off.
The batteries in the UPS can not be recharged. Empty batteries must be replaced. Use two new (same brand and type).
In test a 75 minutes operational lifespan of both batteries at continuous use on 1 PayCon is measured. Real lifespan
depends on used PayCon configuration.
Note: Batteries are chemical waste and must be disposed of according the applying national and local regulations
