PCIe storage enclosure infrastructure
Learn how the 5888 or EDR1 PCIe storage enclosure is different from previous storage enclosures.
With previous IBM SAS storage enclosure models, connecting disk drives was accomplished by using
individual components that were externally connected to each other:

Storage enclosures
v Disk drive controllers
v
SAS cables for multiple paths to devices and dedicated adapter-to-adapter connections
Figure 1 shows an example of a dual storage I/O adapter (IOA) solution by using externally connected
components.
With the 5888 or EDR1 PCIe storage enclosures, all of the necessary components are integrated within the
storage enclosure.
Figure 2 on page 3 shows a dual storage IOA solution that is integrated within the 5888 or EDR1 PCIe
storage enclosure.
