Refer to the following steps to add more 5147-102 storage enclosures to an existing hybrid configuration:
1. An ESS 3500 solution in hybrid configuration has at least one SAS adapter pair. Perform 5141-FN2
adapter MES instructions to install additional pair of SAS adapter if required. Refer ESS 3500 adapter
concurrent MES upgrade to follow the instructions.
2. If you are adding a new SAS adapter pair, re-cabling is required. Refer “Re-cabling guidelines from
single SAS adapter pair to dual SAS adapter pairs ” on page 41.
3. Install up to four empty 5147-102 storage enclosures to rack.
4. Populate the storage enclosure(s) with HDDs making sure to follow the drive population rules.
a. One to four fully populated 5147-102 storage enclosures.
If the first enclosure is half-populated configuration, upgrade to a fully populated configuration
before adding additional enclosures. Refer “Upgrading an IBM Elastic Storage System 5147-102
Storage Enclosure from a half-populated to a fully populated configuration” on page 6.
b. Use at least one SAS adapter per canister for 1 to 2 enclosures,.
c. You need two SAS adapter pairs in order to connect three or more enclosures.
Note: All enclosures must have identical number of HDDs.
5. Connect 5141-FN2 and 5147-102 enclosures.
