let the engine run without an air filter being installed.

A dirty air filter element decreases engine performance, increases fuel consumption
and makes it difficult to start.

You
MUST
make sure that the housing is free of dust and debris.
DO NOT
allow any dust or debris to enter the carburetor.

Remove the air filter housing by unscrewing the nut in an anticlockwise direction.

Carefully remove the cover and remove the air filter element.
8.5
Replace the air filter if there are any signs of damage or wear.
8.6
Otherwise, remove the air filter and tap the debris from the element.
Use a low pressure airline to blow the remaining dust from the air filter by blowing
from the inside to the out.

Wash the foam filter element in a mild detergent solution and allow to dry.
Once dry, soak the foam element in engine oil and remove the excess.
8.8
Reinstall the air filter.
