Sensors
The Hydro-Logic
®
Flexi Logger 300Ex can be used with many sensor types.
Sensors fall into these general categories:
•
HART sensors
•
4-20mA sensors
•
Float switches and other digital sensors
There are three sensor connectors on the Flexi Logger 300Ex. They are labelled
S1, S2 and S3. They are all wired identically, so Pin 1 on connector S1 is also
connected to Pin 1 on the other two connectors.
HART sensors, float switches or one 4-20mA sensor can be used in various
combinations. Sensors should be wired according to the wiring convention in the
table on the following pages.
For HART and 4-20mA sensors, the sensor should also be capable of being flash
powered, with the loop power switched off between readings. The warm-up time
once powered should be short, typically < 15 seconds. Battery life is improved if
warm-up time is short.
Only sensors that have ATEX / IECEx certification and conform to the input /
output parameters detailed on the certificate should be used on the Flexi Logger
300Ex logger in a Hazardous Area. See
HART sensors
Up to three HART sensors can be connected. They must be addressed and
wired as shown in
The address should be set with a HART modem before installation, using the
manufacturer’s software. Addresses must be either 2, 1 or 3, and the loop
current will be fixed. By convention, the address should be the same as the
connector number, S2, S1 and S3.
All HART sensors connect positive (+) to pin 2 and negative (-) to pin G,
regardless of which connector number they are on.
Connecting a HART sensor will prevent use of digital input 2 on the other sensor
connectors, since this pin is used as the HART positive loop connection.
The Flexi Logger 300Ex reads the Primary Variable (PV) of each sensor,
returning this as a percentage of full scale.
The HART sensor power supply is 18V, but this value is reduced at the sensor
terminals via a Zener shunt safety assembly. This ensures the system is ATEX
compliant.
