Using Phone-to-Zone™
Phone-to-Zone™ uses the DTMF “touch tones” produced by your VOIP app to connect your phone to the zone of
your choice. DTMF stands for “dual tone multi-frequency”. They represent a standardized set of tones generated by
each of the buttons on a common keypad. The DI-21 with Phone-to-Zone™ is constantly “listening” for these tone
commands. When a communication connection has been established between your phone and the third-party
device running Skype™, the DI-21 extends that connection to the zone of your choice depending on the series of
DTMF tones entered.
With Phone-to-Zone™ , you have the option of calling into a zone and giving the zone the option of whether or not to
answer (“Ring” option), or you can call in and immediately begin talking into the zone (“Talk” option). For obvious
reasons, “Talk” is the only option that should be used when calling into a zone that does not include a LyncPad. You
also have the option to “Ring ALL Zones” and communication is established with the first zone to answer.
Communication is always between the phone and one zone. If a LyncPad is installed in the zone, the person in that
zone will press the Talk button to communicate back with the person who initiated the call.

Note: “Ringing” a zone will cause the BACKDOOR.mp3 file stored on the DI-21’s SD card to play in both the zone and
phone; the volume for both can be adjusted on the back of the DI-21. You can replace this sound file with any other
.mp3 file as long as you rename it to BACKDOOR.mp3. If a zone you are calling is currently powered off, it will be
automatically powered on and set to “Intercom”. If the zone was previously off and you press a “Talk” code, the first
second of the BACKDOOR.mp3 file will be heard giving a quick notice to the zone of an incoming call.
Initiating a call
A Phone-to-Zone™ call is initiated from another Skype™ account (included in your Contacts list) set up on your
phone. Phone-to-Zone™ works whether or not your phone is connected to the same home network as the third-
party device. If your phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network with internet access, then the Skype call is completely
free. A Skype call can also be initiated from your phone when you are not connected to a Wi-Fi network using the
phone’s data connection- your standard data rates apply but are typically minimal for a short-duration, intercom call.
