TROUBLESHOOTING
TROUBLESHOOTING
BEFORE TROUBLESHOOTING
• Check that the connectors are connected securely.
• Check for sufficient fresh fuel in the fuel tank.
• Read the circuit tester's operation instructions carefully, and observe the instructions during inspection.
HARD STARTING
Check the engine oil level (page 3-3).
Sufficient oil
Normal
Perform the spark test (page 9-6).
Check for leaking current caused by damaged
high tension cord insulation.
Perform "IGNITION SYSTEM
TROUBLESHOOTING" (page 9-2).
Good spark
No spark
Perform the cylinder compression check (page
14-6).
Check to see whether excessive carbon has
accumulated in the combustion chamber
(page 3-7).
Normal
High
compression
Check that the valve clearance is correct
(page 3-6).
Check that the cylinder head is correctly
tightened.
Check for worn or damaged, valves, or valve
seats (page 15-6).
Check for worn piston rings, piston, or cylinder
(page 15-8).
Low
compression
Install the spark plug securely and start the engine
according to the starting procedure.
Loosen the carburetor drain screw and check the
fuel flow from the fuel tank.
Add oil and restart the engine.
Low
Fuel
No fuel
Check for clogged fuel filter or fuel tube (page 3-
8).
Remove the spark plug and inspect for wet or
fouled electrode.
Wet
Dry the electrode and restart, taking care that the
choke is not closed too much.
If flooding is severe, check the carburetor float
valve (page 6-6).
