OMNIKEY 5121 Ethernet Encoder Slot Management

The OMNIKEY 5121 Ethernet Encoder device supports two slots:

1.

Contact Reader Slot.

2.

Contactless Reader Slot.

Normally, each of these two reader slots is reported to the Microsoft Windows Smart Card Resource

Manager. When the user requests that the Smart Card Resource Manager enumerate the list of

available readers, both of these readers will be reported to the user. In the normal configuration,

two readers are reported for each installed OMNIKEY 5121 Ethernet Encoder device.
The Contact Reader is reported to the Smart Card Resource Manager using the same Encoder

Device Name String that is displayed in the

Select Encoder

drop-down list. In the example below

the Contact Reader will be reported using the name string

OMNIKEY 5x21 LAN B1234567 0

The associated Contactless Reader is reported to the Smart Card Resource Manager using the same

Encoder Device Name String, but with a

-CL

tag appended to the end of the Printer Serial Number.

With recent versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system (both server and workstation) the

number of simultaneously installed and supported smart card readers is limited to a maximum value

of 10. Therefore, the Microsoft Windows Smart Card Resource Manager will support only 5

OMNIKEY 5121 Ethernet Encoder devices installed using the normal configuration (i.e., with both

reader slots enabled).
The OMNIKEY 5121 Ethernet Encoder Utility supports the ability to disable either the Contact Reader

Slot or the Contactless Reader Slot associated with all currently installed OMNIKEY 5121 Ethernet

Encoder devices. This functionality is controlled by selecting one of the Encoder Slot Management

options.

Note:

any changes made to the Encoder Slot Management group will not become effective until

after all currently installed OMNIKEY 5121 Ethernet Encoder devices are manually restarted or the

host system is rebooted. Any OMNIKEY 5121 Ethernet Encoder device added after changes have

been made to the Encoder Slot Management group settings will be affected by those new settings.
Once any changes have been made to the Encoder Slot Management options group either the

server/workstation must be rebooted, or each currently installed OMNIKEY 5121 Ethernet Encoder

device instance must be manually restarted using the Restart Selected Encoder option of the

Encoder Menu.
