In this example, the M3xx and other electronic and display components within the

enclosure do not have sufficient operating ranges to meet the external operating

requirements without the aid of the enclosure. Thus, the enclosure must provide controls to

insure that the maximum operating characteristics of each of the enclosure contents is not

exceeded.
Properly designed into an outdoor enclosure, an M3xx provides a best-in-class biometric

performance solution for outdoor environments.
Comparing the M3xx specifications to the enclosure external requirements there are four

control areas the enclosure must provide:
Operating temperature - the enclosure must provide heating and cooling to insure that its

contents are > 0°C and < 60°C when operating.
Water and dust sealing - the enclosure must prevent water and dust ingress at all sealing

surfaces. Examples include keypads, displays, cables, and the M3xx platen area.
Background light -the combination of the enclosure design and the placement of the

enclosure in the environment must prevent exposing the platen to direct sunlight. The

M3xx can tolerate direct lighting up to 18Klux
Condensation -the enclosure must prevent condensation and insure that the relative

humidity (RH) over temperature is maintained within M3xx operating specifications.

4.4

Operating Temperature Control Considerations

Outdoor temperatures vary both seasonally and by time of day. Under normal conditions,

the rate of change of the external temperature is slow while overall daytime/nighttime

variation can be significant. Rain or other forms of precipitation can change the

temperature of the enclosure much more rapidly.
The user will interact with enclosure control surfaces including the sensor platen. The range

of comfort is roughly 5°C to 40°C and this range is much more restrictive than the

operating range of the M3xx itself.
Solar heat gain can be significant on exposed surfaces in the summer months re15

to +20°C over the ambient temperature in some places. To maintain no more than 40°C on

the platen with a solar gain of +15°C means the ambient temperature cannot be greater

than 25°C (77°F) which represents an unrealistic operating restriction for an outdoor

enclosure. Active cooling of the surfaces is not practical, so the only viable strategy is to

place the enclosure in the shade or for the enclosure itself to provide shade to the control

surfaces.
