WARNING
NOT SUITABLE FOR USE ON VEHICLES
THAT ARE FITTED WITH CURTAIN ARIBAGS
i. The HandiRack
®
is made exclusively
for use on the roof of motor vehicles.
ii. The HandiRack
®
is not a flotation
device and must never be used as
a swimming aid or for any other purpose
than as quoted in [i].
iii. It is the end user’s responsibility
to ensure that the instructions on the
following pages are followed, that
fastening devices are tightened correctly
and checked regularly throughout the
journey, that loads are within the limitations
listed, are secured correctly and safely,
spread evenly and that all equipment
is maintained in good order.
iv. When fitting the HandiRack
®
to the
roof of a vehicle, make sure that the roof
is clean and dry. Fitting the HandiRack
®
to a soiled or unclean roof may result in
unwanted marking of the paintwork.
v. The HandiRack
®
has been designed
as a temporary roof load carrying system
and should not be left fitted to the vehicle
when not in use.
vi. Take care to ensure that your load
does not have any sharp edges which
may pierce the inflatable tubes.
6.
Repeat with the second rack and
then store with all the accessories in
the HandiRack
®
drawstring travel bag.
Using the HandiRack
®
in Wet Conditions
In wet conditions on certain models of cars,
it is possible that rainwater could enter the
vehicle where the ‘V’ section breaks the
door seal. To avoid this, fold the ‘V’ section
under the racks and fasten at the Velcro
points,[15] allowing only the fitting straps
to pass inside the door. Do not leave the
HandiRack
®
fitted to a parked vehicle in
wet conditions.
Additional Instructions
• The total weight of your load should
not exceed 80kg and we strongly
advise that you consult your vehicle
owner’s manual as the manufacturer’s
recommended maximum load for the
vehicle’s roof may be less.
• The load should be evenly distributed
over the area of both the racks and the
centre of gravity of the load kept as low
as possible. Loads that overhang at the
ends of the load carrying system should
conform to any laws or by-laws in force
and should be adequately secured.
• Loads should be secured using
HandiStraps
™
or alternative suitable
heavy duty tie-downs. After loading,
re-check the security of the load and the
racks regularly throughout the journey.
• As the HandiRack
®
is air-filled, in warm
conditions it is advisable to allow for the
air within the tubes to expand a little.
In colder conditions the opposite is the
case. During the course of a journey,
we recommend that the pressure of each
tube is rechecked.
• Where items of equipment are being
carried that may induce lifting forces
(surfboards, sail boards, ladders etc.)
they should not be carried side by side,
but should be carried stacked one upon
the other.
All of these types of equipment should
be secured independently to the front
and rear of the vehicle using tie-down
straps that are capable of withstanding
the lifting forces [16].
• When a load is carried on the roof
of a vehicle, it will change the vehicle’s
handling characteristics, notably its
susceptibility to side winds and its
behaviour on bends and when braking.
It is recommended that you drive
with more care. Reduce your speed
and allow for longer braking distances.
• If your vehicle is fitted with roof rails,
ensure that the HandiRack
®
is placed
under those bars.
• The HandiRack
®
should always be
removed, deflated and properly stored
when not in use.
Liability
HandiRack
®
dealers and end users must follow these
instructions carefully. The manufacturer cannot accept
liability for injuries or damage caused by improper use
of the HandiRack
®
or for any application of the product
not outlined within these instructions (e.g. using more
than one set of racks or combining the HandiRack
®
with a different roof load carrying system).
On 2-door cars with rear opening
windows, pass the fitting strap for the
rear HandiRack
®
through the window and
close the window once the HandiRack
®
is
fitted. On 2-door cars without rear opening
windows, both racks should be positioned
over the front door, with the front rack as
far forward as possible.
4.
Any excess straps should be tied to the
rack to avoid any deterioration or excessive
wear and tear or ambient noise [7].
5.
Close all doors [8].
6.
Fully inflate all four tubes with the
HandiPump
™
.[9] Close and push in
all valves so that they recess into the
inflated tubes [10].
7.
Fasten your load to the ‘D’ ring anchor
points using HandiStraps
™
or other suitable
heavy duty tie-downs [11].
Removing the HandiRack
®
from the Vehicle
1.
Remove your load.
2.
Open all doors on the vehicle.
3.
Release the fitting strap by depressing
the lever on the cam buckle [12].
4.
Remove the racks from the roof
of the vehicle.
5.
Starting from the end furthest away
from the valves and whilst squeezing the
valves to release the air, slowly roll the rack
as the air leaves the tubes. [13] Continue
to roll the rack until the Velcro square on
the ‘V’ section meets the Velcro on the
underside of the rack [14].
Fitting & Safety Instructions
The HandiRack
®
has been designed to
fit most cars. Before fitting your HandiRack
®
for the first time, please read the following
guidelines and instructions. The numbers
in the square brackets refer to the images
at the front of this instruction leaflet.
Fitting the HandiRack
®
to the Vehicle
1.
Open all doors on the vehicle.[1] Make
sure the roof surface is clean and dry [2].
2.
Lay one rack across the car above the
front doors as near to the front of the roof
as possible [3].
Repeat with the second rack above
the rear doors. (Where possible, we
recommend that the space between the
racks be 700mm,[4] although the vehicle
manufacturer’s owner’s manual should
be consulted for any specific instructions).
3.
Bring the fitting strap for the front rack
through the car, pass it through the first
‘D’ ring on the other side and then through
the cam buckle [5] making sure that the
strap is sitting centrally over the ‘V’ section
of the rack.[6] Having first made sure that
the rack is sitting centrally on the car and
that the strap is not snagged or twisted,
tighten the strap by pulling it towards you,
again making sure that the rack does
not slip whilst tightening, or that the ‘V’
section has not gathered up around the
door seal. If it has, release and repeat until
the ‘V’ section sits smoothly under the strap
when fully tightened. This precaution will
improve the rack’s grip on the car. Repeat
for the rear rack following the same steps
as above.
