3. Clean away debris and oily substances from
the mating surfaces of the jaws.
4. Flip each jaw 180°, then re-install the cap
screws to secure top jaws, as shown in
Figure 30.

To mount a workpiece onto the 3-jaw chuck:
1. disConnECt lAthE FroM poWEr!
2. place the piece of plywood on the bedway
below the chuck to protect it.
4. use the chuck key to tighten the jaws until
they make contact with the workpiece.
5. turn the chuck by hand to make sure the
workpiece has even contact with all three
jaws and the workpiece is not off-center.
— if the workpiece is not evenly held by all
three jaws or is off-center, loosen the jaws
and repeat
Steps 3–4.
— if the workpiece is seated correctly onto the
chuck, fully tighten the jaws.
