Operation
The test set must have a charged battery installed in order to operate.
1.
Connect the red wire to the ring (negative) side of the circuit.
2.
Connect the black wire to the tip (positive) side of the circuit.
3.
Use the Talk, Monitor and Mute features as described in this section.
Automatic Ground Start
Some lines, especially PABX, require a momentary ground to draw a dial tone.
Connect the test set’s red and black wires to the telephone circuit as usual, and connect the
green wire to ground. Press the TALK button momentarily to check for dial tone.
The ground start is automatic, and the green wire can remain connected without affecting the
call.

Automatic Line Checks
After the TALK button is pressed, the 46054 automatically checks the line for the presence of
digital signals. If it detects digital signals, the speaker will produce a distinctive alarm
(Middle
Pitch–Low Pitch, Middle Pitch–Low Pitch, Middle Pitch–Low Pitch) to indicate that the test set
is connected to a digital line. To prevent disturbance to the digital information being transmit-
ted, the test set will not go off-hook while connected to this type of line.
After determining that the line is free of digital information, the test set checks for excessive
voltages. If the test set signals either the excessive DC voltage alarm
(low pitch, low pitch,
low pitch)
or the AC line voltage alarm
(constant ringing),
remove the test set from the line
carefully and immediately!
