SAFETY EQUIPMENT
Compulsory safety equipment is not brought into line within the European Community. It is
advisable to inform yourself as to the national regulations in force for CE labelled vessels.
Under French regulations, navigation categories, mandatory and permanent limitsfrom shelter,
have been removed from regulation since 1
st
January 2005 for pleasure vessels. Since 8
th
April
2008 the limit of navigation of 6 miles from shelter for light craft (boats of less than 5 meters)
was repealed.
Thus, you can choose a destination or a navigation area when fully examined:
the state of maintenance of your boat
the theoretical capacity of your boat to face a sea and wind conditions (CE design
category, or class of navigation in which the vessel is approved)
navigation conditions in the area
weather forecasts
your ability and your skill
the ability of your crew or passengers
A formal obligation: to have on board safety equipment adapted to your navigation if you
navigation is less than 2 miles from a shelter (basic kit), between 2 and 6 miles (Coastal kit),
or over 6 miles from a shelter (Offshore kit).
For details about the proper safety equipment, contact the maritime affairs:
www.affmar.gouv.nc/static/leisure /materiel_securite_plus.htm
WARNING
Your boat must be equipped with a liferaft. Read the instruction manual carefully. The crew
must be familiar with the use of all the safety equipment (harness, flare, liferaft, etc…); sailing
schools and clubs regularly organize training sessions.
Make sure you are able remain safe on board in case of breakdown and/or electric failure,
especially with regards to removing water (emergency bilge pimp, seals)
Garcia Yachting suggests the use of a PLASTIMO 0.75 litre/cycle pump (reference 14105 with
tube reference 16209) as an emergency means of draining water.
