INTRODUCTION
Thanks for purchasing the FSR Magellan MAS 4100A, a 4x1 audio and video switcher with integrated
scaling. In addition to scaling switchers, such as the MAS-4100, FSR offers a full line of interfaces, line
drivers, distribution amplifiers, down converters, power sequencers and more.
The new Magellan MAS-4100A is a 4x1 audio and video switcher with an integrated scaler. The
MAS-4100A automatically sizes and positions the incoming video signal and then scales the image to
the user selected output resolution. The Magellan MAS 4100A converts Composite Video, S-Video
and YCbCr Component Video signals to a variety of computer and HDTV resolutions. The unit
accommodates most worldwide NTSC, PAL and SECAM TV standards and has many features to
enhance performance. Standard VGA resolutions are supported up to 1024x768 as well as 480p, a
16:9 aspect ratio image at 852x480. These units also feature balanced stereo audio switching with
audio following video.
Several advanced techniques are incorporated into the scaling engine to provide the best possible
scaled output. The 3:2 pull-down detector automatically detects images that began as film. Since
these images began their life at 24 frames per second, and standard video signals are 30 frames per
second, a special algorithm is invoked to provide clear, fluid motion. In addition, a multi-line vertical
filter eliminates artifacts caused in the de-interlacing process. Static images are also processed using a
simple field merging technique to perform de-interlacing and it is very beneficial for static images or
scenes with very little or no motion. Additionally, the MAS 4100A employs a high quality Comb
Filter Decoder for maximum picture quality.
The MAS-4100A is an advanced scaling switcher, but has been made very easy to use. All set-up and
operation controls are on the front panel. In addition to source selection, all of the image attributes
including, brightness, contrast, H-phase and V-phase, tint and color are accessible from the front
panel with easy to use on-screen menus. The unit may also be controlled remotely via an RS-232
connection and supplied software or a control system. The connections on the back are just as easy.
The MAS-4100A accepts composite video on a BNC, S-Video on a mini-DIN, and computer video
on an HD-15 connector. The output format is user selectable as either RGBHV or YCbCr. Both HD-
15 and BNC connectors are provided for maximum flexibility. Only one of these is active at any time.
The balanced audio is available on a 5 position pluggable screw terminal and can easily be interfaced
to balanced or unbalanced audio systems.
