of the straw is located near the user’s mouth, without disturbing the user in his or her head
movements or while speaking.
It is important that the user and the ADL-Stand are always in the same, optimal position
relative to each other. If the ADL-Stand was driven away, for example during the care of the user
or during cleaning work, it must return to the same position and at the same angle relative
to the user. Family or carers should check if objects using the ADL-Stand can really be easily
reached using the ADL-Stand.
Warning:
If the user experiences problems using the ADL-Stand, please contact Focal
Meditech or a healthcare professional as soon as possible.
Risks and contra-indications
No essential user risks are known while using ADL-Stand. ADL-Stand is an aid which should be
only used by the intended users. However, there are no known contra-indications for ADL-Stand.
To be able to use ADL-Stand the following warnings must be taken into account.
Warning:
Make sure the knobs are always tightened firmly.
Warning:
Do not overload the ADL-Stand. If there is any doubt about the stability, try the
setup first in a safe area (away from the user) to see if there is no tendency to tilt.
Warning:
The gooseneck is a bendable part. This means that there may also be overload
of the gooseneck. This is reflected by the (often gradual) bending of the gooseneck with
a modified, incorrect setting of the accessory as a result.
Warning:
When ADL-Stand is used as a cup holder, check whether the user suffers from
swallowing disorders. They should use the ADL-Stand only under expert supervision. If in
doubt, consult a speech therapist.
Warning:
In case of doubt about the safety of the device, the product should not be
used anymore. Do not try to fix it yourself but contact Focal Meditech or its authorized
representative. Failure to do this will void the warranty.
Warning:
ADL-Stand does not have parts that can be modified or repaired by the user or
other persons. Do not modify any part of this equipment without the manufacturer’s
authorization. Failure of this can lead to malfunctioning and void the warranty.
Intended use and operation of the device
Intended use
ADL-Stand is a tool for people with a need for support with drinking. It is designed for people
who want to be able to drink independently.
Intended users
The intended users of the ADL-Stand are:
1
Users are often individuals with advanced neuromuscular conditions such as muscular
dystrophy.
2
People with high spinal cord injuries.
3

4
Combinations of these.
Operation of the device
The ADL-Stand is a system that consists of several rods which are interconnected via a pivoting
point. At the distal end of the system an accessory is mounted. ADL-Stand is mounted on the
‘solid’ worktable, working/ wheel chair or movable carrier.
ADL-Stand has a robust design combined with a large variety of adjustable settings. Therefore,
the ADL-Stand is easy to adapt to the users need.
The user of ADL-Stand can use this device in various environments like home, workplace, school
or institutional setting. A restricted tolerance of environmental humidity exists.
ADL-Stand is not designed to be used in combinations of large forces. ADL-Stand cannot be
used as a support when standing up or getting seated.
ADL-Stand is not designed to withstand impacts that can be introduced during collisions with
a wall or other objects (if mounted on a wheelchair). Also, ADL-Stand is not constructed to
withstand high external vertical forces that can be introduced for example by abnormal use or
patient hoist systems (if mounted on a wheelchair).
Usage of the device
The use of the ADL-Stand is easy. The use is aimed at packing or reaching objects in a very
limited area of activity. After the right choice for a piece of equipment, a good setting and
positioning are essential. The user may need help for this. When it comes to grabbing, let the
user indicate the space where objects can be reached the most easily. Now place the ADL-Stand
on the user’s predetermined side. Set the height setting with the knob on the vertical tube,
such that the accessory is located in his easily accessible area. Use if needed the joint in the rod
system for the desired height/ angle. Check that the intended area is indeed easily to reach.
With the gooseneck, the setting can be refined. By turning the accessory on the gooseneck,
the angle of the accessory can now also be set relative to the user. When used as a drinking
aid, the use of a straw is assumed. The ADL-Stand should be set up in such a way that the top
