SYSTEM MAINTENANCE
The following checks are recommended in accordance with national requirements. Make an entry
in the log book every time a test is performed. Example of routine testing is shown below:
1.
Daily Inspection
- Check the SUPPLY indicator is illuminated and inspect for any fault
indicators showing or sounder operating, and that any previous faults have been attended to.
2.
Weekly Test
– Perform a lamp test, ensure all indicators illuminate. Put the panel into WALK
TEST and operate a call point or detector to test the system, followed by panel reset. Each
week choose a different zone and call point or detector in rotation.
3
Quarterly Test
– Check all previous log book entries and verify that all remedial action has
been taken. Operate a call point or detector on each zone to test the fire alarm as in 2 above.
Return the panel to its normal state, then isolate the mains supply and perform an EVACUATE
to ensure that the battery is capable of supplying the alarm sounders.
4.
Annual Test
– As in 2 and 3 above but test all call points and detectors for correct operation.
Using the double pole isolator, verify that the terminals of the mains terminal block are secure
and that the wires are securely fixed in place.
5.
Every 2-3 years
– Have the smoke detectors checked or changed by a fire alarm engineer to
ensure correct operation and freedom from potential false alarms.
6.
Every 5 years
– replace the sealed lead acid battery.
LOG BOOK
This log book should be maintained by a responsible person who should ensure that every entry is
properly recorded. An ‘event’ should include fire alarms (real and false), faults, tests, temporary
disconnections or zone isolations and the dates of service engineers visits and the work carried out.
