4. INSTALLING THE HEATING CABLE
Use a good-quality PVC insulation strip; lay
the heating cable along the pipe and secure
it to the pipe at intervals of approximately
600 mm.
3. CONNECTING THE THERMOSTAT
The thermostat (it is located at the end of the
heating cable) must be mounted flush onto
the pipe and secured with PVC insulation tape
(see illustration). Do not use cable ties. The
thermostat must be installed at the coldest
point on the extreme end of the pipe. The
thermostat accurately records the tempe-
rature of the pipe and switches the heating
cable on and off as required in order to pre-
vent the pipe from freezing, and to ensure an
efficient operation of the cable.

Connect the cable to an appropriate power socket as soon as the cold weather and/or winter
begins.
5. INSULATING THE PIPE AND HEATING CABLE
To protect the pipe against frost, insulation must be fitted on the pipe over the heating cable. The
heating cable and the pipe can be insulated with mineral wool or flexible plastic foam insulation.
THE INSULATION MUST BE FITTED EVENLY TO THE THERMOSTAT AS WELL AS TO THE PIPE
HEATING CABLE in order to ensure that all parts of the pipe are maintained at the same tempe-
rature. If the area around the thermostat is more insulated than the remainder of the pipe, the
pipe may freeze. If the area around the thermostat is not as well insulated as in other parts of
the pipe, the thermostat will cause the cable to operate uneconomically. The thermostat swit-
ches the heating cable on when it registers a temperature of approximately 3 °C or lower, and
switches it off again when it registers a temperature of 9 °C or above.
WHEN USING MINERAL WOOL INSULATION, insulation with a MAXIMUM thickness of 13 mm
can be fitted around the heating cable. It is important to note that moisture can cause damage to
mineral fibre insulation (rock wool); a waterproof wrapping must therefore be fitted to the insu
-
lation in order to prevent moisture from penetrating.
WHEN USING FOAM INSULATION, insulation with a MAXIMUM thickness of 13 mm can be fitted
to the heating cable. Moisture does not usually affect foam insulation; a waterproof seal is the-
refore not normally required.
