The Ex barrier must be connected to the equipotential bonding system (EBS) of the Ex
zone. The connection cable used for this must conform to the requirements of the
installation zone and the minimum requirements of DIN VDE 0165 – 1 or DIN EN 60079 - 14:
Min. wire cross-section 2 x 1,5 mm² Cu
or alternatively
Min. wire cross-section 1 x 4 mm² Cu
In inherently safe circuits the earthing terminals of the Ex barriers without electrical isolation
(e.g. zener-barrier) must be connected in accordance to DIN EN 60070-14:
1. Connected by the shortest way to the potential compensation rail or
2. In systems where the grounding point must be connected with a high reliability that the
electric impedance from the connector to the grounding point of the high power current
system must not exceed 1

. This could be realised by using a grounding rail or special
grounding rod. The used conductor must be insulated to avoid an interference of the
grounding caused by a residual current in the metal parts where the conductor may get
electrical contact (e.g. control or patch panels). In places with a high risk of mechanical
damage the conductor must be protected with a suitable measure.

All earth potentials must be identical. An additional equipotential bonding conductor may
be necessary.

Take suitable steps to protect the system against electrostatic discharge.
•
Observe that two-detector coincidence type A mode is not supported for fire detectors
series IQ8Quad Ex (i) with these components or this wiring (Fig. 1) when using the
Ex barrier (Part No. 764744).
