Appendix I: Glossary
Bios
Basic input/output system. is the software that contains all the input/output control code interfaces in
the PC. It performs hardware detection when the system starts, starts operating the operating
system, and provides an interface between the operating system and the hardware.
The BIOS is stored in a read-only memory chip.
BUS
In a computer system, a channel for exchanging data between different components is a set of
hardware lines.
The BUS we are referring to is usually a local line inside the CPU and the main memory element.
Chipset
an integrated chip designed to perform one or more related functions.
We are referring to a system-level chipset made up of South bridge and Northbridge, which
determines the architecture and main functions of the motherboard.
AHCI
Standard control interface for serial ATA, supported by Microsoft Windows XP (above SP1) and IAA
drivers
Comos
Complementary metals - oxide semiconductors. is a widely used semiconductor type. It has high
speed and low power consumption. The CMOS we refer to is a portion of the space reserved in
CMOS RAM on the motherboard to hold date, time, system information, system parameter setting
information, etc.
