Congratulations on the purchase of your
ZHE+ Zero Headspace Extractor from Environmental Express
The volatiles section of the TCLP procedure, Method 1311, allows for the collection
of leachable volatile organic compounds that may be present in a hazardous
waste sample.
The ZHE+ zero headspace extractor meets all EPA criteria for a zero-head space
extraction vessel. The apparatus consists of a cylindrical sample chamber supported
on both ends by plates. Tie rods connect the end plates. Viton®-A 0-rings seal the
contents of the cylinder. Pressure moves a dual sealed piston within the honed
cylinder. A series of valves allows the induction or release of pressure and the
subsequent movement of the piston, sample or extraction fluid as required. Etched
screens held just beneath the plug valve provide support for a 90 mm filter through
which the TCLP extract must exit.
Extraction of the solid fraction of the sample takes place in a rotary extractor with
the ZHE+ zero headspace extractor being tumbled end over end for eighteen hours
at 30 rpm. The Heavy-Duty LE Rotator from Environmental Express (Item # LE1002,
LE1002-240) is suitable and meets the requirements of Method 1311.
