Instructions for the installation and

commissioning of Power Xpert

Section 3:  Room requirements

The destination electrical room or Integrated Power Assembly (IPA) 

should be kept dry and well ventilated. Indoor operating conditions 

for the Power Xpert IGX vertical sections must conform to an 

ambient temperature greater than -5 degrees C and less than 40 

degrees C., altitude less than 1000 m (consult Eaton representative 

for higher altitudes). Ideally, atmospheric conditions within the 

switchgear room shall be free of corrosives, smoke, dust, and 

flammable vapors.

3.1.  Floor requirements

Power Xpert IGX switchgear is designed for installation in an 

electrical room over a cable vault, an IPA or power house. It is 

very important that the installed lineup be level and flat. Eaton 

recommends that the electrical room design include steel rails 

embedded in the vault concrete, for mounting the Power Xpert IGX 

switchgear. See

The finished foundation surface shall be flat and level within 1 mm 

[0.04 in] in 800 mm [31.5 in] in any direction, left to right, front to 

back, and diagonally. Alternatively, a local flatness “FF” value of 50 

or higher and “FL” value of 37 to 40 as defined in industry standard 

ASTM-E1155-96 and higher and an accompanying industry standard 

ACI 117-90 may be used to establish the flatness and levelness of 

the finished foundation.

It is recommended but not necessary to finish the foundation to 

the same requirements in front of the Power Xpert IGX switchgear 

assembly in a traffic area defined by the end user. The minimum 

recommended foundation anchoring system requirements as noted 

in 

Figure 9 

are sufficient to withstand the combined tensile and 

overturning reactive forces imposed on the foundation at the Power 

Xpert IGX switchgear assembly mounting points during a seismic 

event. 

Any deviation from these recommendations is the sole responsibility 

of the end user. 

Consult with a licensed structural or civil engineer if some other 

foundation methods are to be considered.

3.2.  Ceiling, lateral and rear clearance requirements and 

cable vault layout

Refer to the Power Xpert IGX switchgear project installation 

drawings for details on the Power Xpert IGX switchgear installation.

If low-voltage control or signal wires are being routed in the same 

space being utilized to accommodate medium-voltage power cables 

connected to the IGX switchgear assembly, then care should be 

taken to ensure low-voltage wiring is adequately separated and/

or shielded from medium-voltage conductors to avoid electrical 

interference.
