Introduction

The CurrentWatch™ ECSD Series cur-

rent operated switches from Eaton’s

brand  are  DC  current-operated  switches.

They switch when the current level

detected through the aperture exceeds

the adjustable setpoint.  The ECSD

Series accepts 12 VAC/DC or 24 VAC/

DC power.  The outputs are isolated

from the input and power supply.  The

ECSD Series can be ordered with either

a solid-state output or a Form C Relay

output.
The ECSD Series provides the same dependable indication of status

offered by the CurrentWatch ECS Series, but with the added benefit

of increased setpoint precision.  A choice of three jumper-selectable

input ranges allow the ECSD Series to be tailored to an application,

providing more precise control through improved setpoint resolution.

Features such as isolated solid-state or mechanical relay outputs;

4-20 A, 10-50 A, and 20-100 A input ranges are standard.

Installation

Considerations for all ECSD Series models…

•

Run wire to be monitored through the aperture (opening) in the

switch body.

•

These switches can be located in the same environment as

motors, contactors, heaters, pull-boxes, and other electrical enclo-

sures.

•

Mounting can be done in any position or hung on a wire.

•

Be sure to leave at least one in. (2.54 mm) between the sensor

and other magnetic devices.

Quick Install Guide

The below steps can be followed to quickly install a CurrentWatch

ECSD Series switch.

1.  Run the wire to be monitored through the aperture.
2.  Connect power and output wiring:

a.  Make sure the power supply matches specifications,
b.  Ensure output load matches the output shown on the switch

label.

3.  Adjust the setpoint.

a.  Choose correct range by positioning the range jumper.
b.  Use the potentiometer to adjust the setpoint.

Setpoint Adjustment

The CurrentWatch ECSD Series features two setpoint adjustment

mechanisms.

•

First, select the setpoint range with the range jumper.

•

Then, fine tune the setpoint with the 11-turn potentiometer (pot).

The 11-turn pot is shipped from the factory set fully counter-clock-

wise to the lowest setpoint.  Turning the pot clockwise will increase

the setpoint.  The pot has a slip-clutch to prevent damage at either

end of its rotation.  To determine where the adjustment is, turn the

pot all the way counter-clockwise.  This will return it to the minimum

setpoint.

Important Setpoint Adjustment Notes

•

Normally Open (N.O.) output contacts are solid-state.  Check out-

put status by applying a small load and then reading the voltage

drop across the contacts.  An ohmmeter set on “continuity” will

give misleading results.  Models with mechanical relays can be

accurately tested with an ohmmeter.

•

It is recommended the setpoint be adjusted to allow for normal

current/voltage variations.

•

These switches feature an adaptive hysteresis (deadband) of five

percent of the setpoint.  This allows sensitivity at low setpoints

while eliminating dithering and output chattering at high setpoints.

Typical Adjustment Steps

1.  Make sure all wiring is correct, all terminals are tight and that

power is on (look for the green power LED).

2.  Move the jumper to the desired range.  Then, turn the pot to the

minimum setpoint (11 turns counter-clockwise).

3.  Have normal operating current running through the switch.  The

output should be tripped since the pot is at its minimum set-

point.  The red output LED should be on.

4.  Turn the pot clockwise until the unit un-trips.  This is indicated by

the red output LED turning off and the output switching.

5.  Now turn the pot counter-clockwise slowly until the unit trips

again.  It is now set at the current level being monitored.
a.  To set underload, turn the pot about 1/8 turn further counter-

clockwise,

b.  To set overload, turn the pot about 1/8 turn further clockwise.
