IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TAKING A READING
1- What is blood pressure?
A force is created by the heart as it pushes blood circula-
tion system. Another force is created by the arteries as
they resist the blood flow. Blood pressure is the result of
these two forces. The systolic is the number representing
the pressure while the heart is beating. The diastolic is
the number representing the pressure when the heart is
resting between two beats.
2- What about low blood pressure?
In general, the lower blood pressure the better is, unless
it causes some unconfortable symptoms such as fainting
and lightheadness. Blood pressure fluctuates greatly in
the course of a day. The following factors influence blood
pressure and cause its variation : bathing, breathing, con-
versation, drinking alcohol, exercise, moving, mental ten-
sion, meals, temperature changes, worries, smoking, etc.
CORRECT MEASURING POSITION
To obtain the most accurate blood pressure
measurement, the correct method must be followed :
• Be seated at a table.
• Rest your arm on the table (muscles relaxed).
• Place both feet on the ground.
The cuff must be at the same level as the heart, or an ac-
curate measurement will not be possible.
