HINTS AND TROUBLESHOOTING
STUD DETECTION
When the detector indicates the possible position of a stud, do not assume that it has definitely
located a stud, as it can be affected by varying densities in boarding or other objects behind the
board.
Once a stud has possibly been located, several further readings should be taken vertically above
and below the original. If the readings still indicate that there is possibly a stud in that position do
not assume that it definitely is a stud until further tests are carried out with the metal voltage
detector to make sure what has been detected is not a metal pipe or power cable.
If the test for metal and voltage prove negative, it is reasonably safe to assume that a stud has
been located.
Before drilling into the wall take several readings up, down and across the stud position, marking
the point at which the red light comes on and where it goes off. Draw lines between these points
to mark both sides of the stud then draw a line in the middle to mark the centre of the stud.
See page 5, figs. 6-9.
RECALIBRATION WARNING
Before attempting recalibration the user should be aware that the trimmers located on the side of
the detector only have a total adjustment of approximately
3
⁄
4
of a turn. Attempting to turn any
further will result in either damage to the detector itself, or the tip of the adjusting screwdriver
supplied, making further recalibration impossible.
See page 3, fig.2 for location of trimmers.

Voltage detection.
Red light remains on and
buzzer sounds.
Green light remains on.
Red light remains on and

Red light and sound.
Pulses before use i.e. when
setting in air.
A. Hold detector in the air and
turn blue dial full travel
towards on/off switch.
B. If red light is still on, detector
needs recalibration. Refer to
page 6, metal/voltage
detection adjustment.
This indicates that the detector
is functioning correctly.
A. Hold detector in the air and
turn the blue dial full travel
towards the on/off switch.
Refer to page 6
B. If red light remains on, the
detector needs recalibration.
Refer to page 6, stud
detection adjustment.
