Replacing the Blade Clutch Springs
BEFORE PERFORMING ANY MAINTENANCE
PROCEDURE, STOP THE ENGINE AND
DISCONNECT THE SPARK PLUG WIRE.
Tools Needed:
•
1/2" Wrench
•
9/16" Wrench
•
Gloves
Remove the Belt Guard by unscrewing the Knob, pull
the Guard forward, and lift to remove it (
Figure 12
on
page 24).
Return Spring:
1. Remove one end of the Return Spring from the
Eyebolt on the machine frame and from the
Clutch Spring Hook at the Clutch Tab (
Figure 23
).
2. Install the new Return Spring by reversing the
above procedure.
Clutch Spring:
1. Remove the Return Spring as indicated above.
2. Remove the Clutch Spring from the Clutch Tab by
rotating the tab toward the rear of the machine
(clockwise) to relieve tension and unhook the
Spring from the Tab (
Figure 23
).
3. Remove the top Nut from the Clutch Cam Pivot
Bolt (
Figure 24
) using a 9/16" Wrench.
4. With a gloved hand, remove the Idler Tension
Spring from the Pivot Bolt by pulling the Spring
toward the Bolt and lifting it off (
Figure 24
).
5. Using a 9/16" Wrench, raise the Cam Retaining
Nut, lift the Clutch Cam up on the Pivot Bolt, and
remove the Clutch Spring Retaining Nut using a
1/2" Wrench (

).
6. Remove the old Clutch Spring from beneath the
Clutch Cam and install the new Clutch Spring with
the Hook that attaches to the Clutch Tab facing
down (
Figure 25
). Tighten the Clutch Spring
Retaining Nut.
7. Slide the Cam back down Pivot Bolt and tighten
the Retaining Nut.
NOTE:
Do not over tighten. The Cam should be free to
pivot on the Pivot Bolt.
8. Replace Clutch Spring on the Clutch Tab and the
Tension Spring on the Pivot Bolt in the reverse
order of steps 2 thru 4.
9. Replace the Return Spring as indicated above.
10. Replace the Belt Guard (

on page 24).
