Intended use
The battery charger can charge or supply a reten-
tion voltage to batteries which are used to gener-
ate power in vehicles or on boats.
The device is intended for indoor use only.
The battery charger is used to charge batteries of
the following types: lead acid, gel, LiFePO4, and
AGM.
This product is only suitable for the intended pur-
pose and application in accordance with these
instructions.
This manual provides information that is necessary
for proper installation and/or operation of the
product. Poor installation and/or improper operat-
ing or maintenance will result in unsatisfactory per-
formance and a possible failure.
The manufacturer accepts no liability for any injury
or damage to the product resulting from:
• Incorrect assembly or connection, including
excess voltage
• Incorrect maintenance or use of spare parts
other than original spare parts provided by the
manufacturer
• Alterations to the product without express per-
mission from the manufacturer
• Use for purposes other than those described in
this manual
Dometic reserves the right to change product
appearance and product specifications.
Technical description
The charger provides output for house batteries,
as well as a 5 A output for starting batteries.
The charger applies battery temperature adapted
charging voltage (Pb) or charging current (LiFe-
PO4) corrections with the temperature sensor con-
nected.
Using sense cabling allows charge voltage correc-
tions necessary to compensate voltage drops on
the cabling caused at high charging currents.
The device has the following protective systems:
• Battery reverse polarity protection (by fuse)
• Output over voltage / short circuit protection
• AC Input over/under voltage protection
• Internal high temperature protection
Double battery banks (MT PL 1250)
MT PL 1250 has two power outputs for two inde-
pendent battery banks. The automatic charge cur-
rent distributor charges up the lowest battery bank
first with full power. When both battery banks are
on the same level, they will both follow the battery
charging curve explained in the next chapter.
Battery charging curve
When charging a battery the charging can be illus-
trated in a charging curve with different phases
(fig.
1: Low voltage startup (derating)
If the battery voltage is deeply discharged (below
10 V), the charge current is reduced to maximum
50% in the startup phase. When the battery volt-
age rises or is above 10 V, the bulk phase starts.
2: Bulk phase
During the bulk phase the battery is charged with a
constant current (100 % charge current) until the
battery voltage reaches the absorption voltage.
3: Absorption phase
In the absorption phase constant voltage (CV) is
applied and the charge current decreases.
The duration of the phase depends on the battery
type and state of charge.
