PORCH LIGHT FITTING INSTRUCTIONS
PLEASE READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE INSTALLATION
LEAVE A COPY FOR THE USER/MAINTENANCE ENGINEER FOR FUTURE REFERENCE
We recommend this fitting is installed by a qualified Electrician.
IMPORTANT INSTALLATION INFORMATION
• Installation should be carried out in accordance with the latest edition of
the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS7671) and taking into consideration the latest
Building Regulations. If in doubt, consult a qualified electrician.
•
Before commencing any installation or maintenance work, ensure
electricity is switched off at the mains.
• Please take note of the maximum rated voltage for your Porch Light.
• Please take note of the IP (Ingress Protection) rating of your Porch Light when
deciding location.
• Always allow sufficient slack in the supply cable in order to remove the Porch
Light from its position for any future maintenance.
• Please take note of the nearest illuminated surface as shown on the label.
GENERAL INSTALLATION - SAFETY
• Please make sure you are safe when working at height.
• Employ the latest safety regulations and procedures to ensure the safe
installation of this Porch Light.
• When positioning your Porch Light out of doors please take note that
outdoor electrical installations should be installed by a qualified Electrician.
Correct circuit protection for all exterior electrical services should include a
residual current device (RCD), also known as an earth leakage circuit breaker
(ELCB). This simple device ensures that the power is cut off immediately; it
detects a leakage of current to earth, indicating an electrical fault which is
potentially threatening to life. Observe these few simple rules and keep your
outdoor electrical installation safe.
INTRODUCTION
This Porch Light incorporates has either a Dusk to Dawn photocell or PIR
(Passive Infrared) with light sensor control option fitted.
Dusk to Dawn Version
The Dusk to Dawn photocell version turns on when it starts to go dark in the
evening and switches off when it gets lighter in the morning. It will not detect
movement but will continually illuminate pathways, steps, patios, porches etc,
or wherever constant security illumination is required. The basic installation
procedure is exactly the same as the PIR version but the PIR has some siting
rules to be observed and controls to set.
PIR Version
The PIR version continuously scans a preset operating zone or area and
immediately switches the lamp on automatically when movement is detected,
when no movement is detected the lamp switches off. If movement is constant
within the range of the PIR the lamp will stay on.
The PIR option makes it ideal for pathways, steps, patios, porches etc where
security or convenient lighting is required.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
To achieve the best results from your Porch Light we suggest you take into
account the following points before you fit the unit.
• Dot not fix to a surface where vibration is possible or may occur.
• Ideally the Porch Light should be mounted 1.8 to 2.5 metres (6 to 8 feet)
above the area to be scanned (see Fig. 1).
• To avoid damage to the unit, do not aim the PIR sensor towards the Sun.
• To avoid nuisance triggering of the PIR, the sensor should be directed away
from heat sources, such as barbecues, air-conditioners, other outside lighting,
moving cars and flue vents. Also keep away from strong electromagnetic
disturbances.
• Do not aim the PIR towards reflective surfaces, such as, smooth white walls,
swimming pools etc. The PIR sensor scanning specifications (approximately
12 metres at approximately 110° - Horizontal, see Fig 2) may vary slightly,
depending on the mounting height and location. The detection rang of
the unit may also alter with temperature changes. Before selecting a place
to install your PIR Porch Light, you should note that movement across the
scan area is more effective than movement directly towards or away from
the PIR sensor (see Fig. 3). If movement is made walking directly towards
or away from the PIR sensor and not across, the PIR detection range will be
substantially reduced (see Fig 4)
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
1. Switch off the Mains supply at the main fuse/distribution box, ensuring
there is no power to the Porch Light.
2. Refer to Figs 6, 7 and 8 for installation details.
3. Remove the Porch Light Diffuser/Cover by using a flat head screwdriver in
the slots shown in Fig 6. Gently twist the screwdriver in all 4 slots in turn
until the cover is completely released from the locking mechanism.
4. Unscrew the screw marked
A
(Fig 7) and remove the transparent plate (Fig
8) to uncover the terminal block, cable gasket and mounting hole.
5. Mark the mounting holes positions (x 2) onto the wall/surface. Drill and
plug the wall at the marked positions. Screw the Porch Light body to the
wall/surface with suitable mounting screws (supplied), making sure the
cable is fed through the rubber cable gasket.
6. Then make the electrical connections to the terminal block as follows:
LIVE
- (Red or Brown) to a terminal marked
L
NEUTRAL
- (Black or Blue) to a terminal marked
N
EARTH
- (Green/Yellow) to a terminal marked
WARNING - THIS FITTING MUST BE EARTHED
7. Ensure that there are no exposed conductors, loose or trapped cable
strands.
8. Insert an appropriate maximum 60 Watt/240V~50Hz incandescent bulb/
lamp into the BC bulb/lamp holder (not supplied), or an energy saving
bulb/lamp, such as a Fusion
®
11W spiral Compact Fluorescent or a 6.5W
LED GLS - Please note this Porch Light is not dimmable.
9. Re-fix the transparent plate by screw(s) marked A (Fig. 7).
10. Re-fit the Porch Light Diffuser/Cover by hand.
11. After finishing the mounting, you can now adjust the detection area and
working state of the PIR, the Dusk to Dawn Sensor version is fixed.
12. Switch on the power supply for testing and adjustment.
Please Note:
This Porch Light should be wired to its own light switch. Do
not interconnect with other lights on the same switch.
UNDERSTANDING THE CONTROLS (PIR)
(refer to Fig. 5)
Adjusting the Duration Time:
The length of time the Porch Light remains
on once activated can be adjusted from 10 ± 5 Seconds to 4 ± 1 Minutes.
Rotating the TIME control from + to - will alter the duration time.
Note: Once the light has been triggered by the PIR sensor any subsequent
detection will start the time period again from the beginning
Adjusting the Lux Control Level:
The Lux control module has a built-in sensing
device (photocell) that detects daylight and darkness. The position denotes
that the Porch Light can work during the day and at night. the position
means it will only work at night. You can set to operate the unit at the desired
level by adjusting the LUX control.
SETTING THE CONTROLS
1. Turn the LUX control to the daylight position, turn the Porch Light
on and wait half a minute for the control circuit to stabilise. At this stage
ensure that the TIME control is set at the minimum duration time
-
position.
The Porch Light will now switch on and remain on for approximately 30
seconds (within 60 seconds).
2. Direct the sensor toward the desired area to be scanned by adjusting the PIR
sensor.
3. Have another person move across the centre of the area to be scanned and
slowly adjust the PIR sensor until the unit detects the presence of the of the
moving person, causing the light to switch on (see Fig 3).
4. Adjust the time control to the required setting.
5. To set the LUX level at which the light will automatically switch ‘ON’ at
night, please turn the LUX control from the daylight position to night .
If the light is required to switch on earlier, eg Dusk, wait for the desired
environmental light level, then slowly turn the LUX control towards the
daylight position while someone walks across the centre of the area to
be detected. When the light switches on, release the LUX control. You may
need to make further adjustments for your ideal light level setting.
