CHANGING TUBES
Both the preamp tubes and power tubes are cathode biased, or
self-biasing. You may replace these tubes without rebiasing.
You may substitute other tubes for the 12AX7, such as a 12AY7,
12AU7, 12AT7, etc. Do not use these tubes in place of the EF86
as the pin assignments are not the same. We also recommend
that you do not change the 12AU7 in the phase inverter, since
the stage was designed around this tube.
As a guideline, we recommend replacing preamp tubes at least
every 3 years. Replace the power tubes and phase inverter every
12-18 months. With cathode biased amps, sooner is better than
later. These recommendations are rather broad and your
experience may vary based on actual usage.
