CHAPTER THREE
3-16
bc630AT Real Time Clock Module
Datum Inc
3.7.3 SETTING THE RTC IC TIME
Setting the time of the RTC IC is accomplished by loading the desired time into DAT00 - DAT06
followed by the 'Set RTC IC Time' command. The format of the Day of Week data is: Sunday = 0,
Monday = 1 ... Friday = 5, Saturday = 6. The RTC IC maintains this time with automatic leap year
adjustment independent of the time decoded by the bc630AT. The RTC IC time can also be set
(synchronized) to the time currently being decoded by the bc630AT. (Refer to section 3.7.4).
3.7.4 SYNCHRONIZING THE RTC IC TO EXTERNAL TIME CODE
Synchronization of the RTC IC to external time code is achieved by issuing the 'Synchronize RTC IC'
command. The ready status value of 14H is returned after the synchronization of the RTC IC is initiated
by the bc630AT. However, the synchronization process requires two seconds of time code therefore
the synchronization is complete approximately two seconds later.
To properly sync the month/day data of the RTC IC, the year data must be loaded into the RTC IC
before synchronization. This allows the bc630AT to do the proper conversion of the Julian Time Code
Format to the month/day/year format of the RTC IC with automatic leap year adjustment. The
bc630AT automatically detects an invalid Julian date. (i.e. number of days = 0 or greater than 365
[366 in a leap year]). If an invalid number of days is detected, the bc630AT synchronizes only the
hour/min/second time in the RTC IC. The user is responsible for providing the proper day-of-week
data. However, this data is optional.
3.8 EXTERNAL 1PPS OR 1, 5, 10 MHz PRECISION REFERENCE
The Time Code Select register has options to decode an external 1PPS or 1, 5, 10 MHz frequency
references. When these modes are selected the bc630AT does a one time load of the time from the
battery backed RTC IC and maintains that time with the selected external reference signal.
When the 1, 5, 10 MHz mode is selected, the bc630AT:
•
Automatically detects the external frequency source as 1, 5, or 10 MHz.
•
Performs a one time load of the major time from the battery backed RTC IC.
•
Disciplines the bc630AT clock with the external frequency.
The 1PPS mode disciplines the bc630AT clock with the rising edge of the external pulse.
