OSCILLOSCOPE
A built-in oscilloscope utility has been included for viewing au-
dio and other waveforms through either the Webpages or the
LCD-touchscreen displays. Vertical sensitivity is scaled and an-
notated with respect to the 100%-modulation point, and the
horizontal timebase adjusts for the most meaningful display of
the selected signal.

Applications
A primary function of
the Oscilloscope utility
is to view actual signal
waveforms. View: but-
tons allow selection
between MPX (the FM-
baseband signal), the
FM stereo Pilot , the DSB
RDS
subcarrier, and
left and right program
audio. The 57kHz RDS
subcarrier waveform
is on display here.
These are real-time
oscillograms, and the
Pause bar at the bottom of the screen lets you freeze the wave-
form. The little magnifying glass in the upper-right corner will
switch you to a full-screen display.
Audio XY
Display
The ‘scope function
can also serve as an XY
“stereoscope.” XY
displays indicate both
level and phase differ-
ences between left and
right channels, giving
a visual representa-
tion of the ‘stereoph-
ony’ of the program
and a warning of mon-
aural compatibility is-
sues.
When XY is imple-
mented with a traditional analog oscilloscope, the display re-
sembles a ‘connect-the-dots’ image of the so-named children’s
activity. The 541 and most digital ‘scopes can optionally show
either Lines or Points . The Points option presents a more artistic
‘constellation’ as seen in the example, and in this instance
Points and Persistence were both engaged to show the short-
term trend of the stereo image.
