III. DESIGNING A MAXI-THERM SYSTEM
IMPORTANT
The following procedures are used to size indirect water heaters based on the amount of hot water that will be
required during a given hour. In doing so it is assumed that this demand will be evenly spread out over the course
of the entire hour.
THESE SIZING PROCEDURES ARE PROVIDED AS A GUIDE TO ASSIST THE PROFESSIONAL CON-
TRACTOR IN SIZING MAXI-THERMS. BECAUSE OF THE LARGE VARIETY OF DEMAND SITUATIONS
ENCOUNTERED IN THE FIELD, CROWN BOILER COMPANY CANNOT GUARANTEE THE SUITABIL-
ITY OF THESE PROCEDURES TO ALL INSTALLATIONS.
Three steps must be taken to properly design a Crown Maxi-Therm system:
1) Determine the domestic hot water requirements.
2) Select a Maxi-Therm / boiler combination
3) Select a pump, zone piping size, and control system to provide adequate and timely boiler water
flow through the Maxi-Therm coil.
This manual presents three methods of sizing Maxi-Therms:
Method A: “Quick” Residential
Method B: “Detailed” Residential
Method C: Commercial

For whirlpool (Jacuzzi) sizing see Appendix A
