6. The DCF time signal
The DCF radio signal is emitted from a transmitter in Mainflingen near Frankfurt. It is
encoded and contains the exact time for Germany. The transmitter has a range of
about 1.500 km. Under favourable conditions, the range can extent to 2.000 km.
Clocks equipped with a radio receiver can receive and decode the radio signal with-
in this transmitting range. Setting the time manually is not necessary with these
clocks (e.g. changing the time from standard time to daylight saving time). The time
is automatically changed from standard time to daylight saving time or vice-versa
within 24 hours at the latest.
Among other things, the DCF signal includes the precise time (theoretical deviation
of 1 second in a million years!) and the date.
